Easy as Point, Shoot, Click
We have a photographer! The step I swore would take 2,159 visits to area wedding photographers only required three visits to convince me.
The photographer previously blogged about will be photographing our wedding with a friend from Michigan. The series of events that lead to the decision fell into place perfectly, plus we both liked Thomas instantly when we met him and left that night going "what if this is it" How easy would that be?" The issue was his prices.
After visiting him, life became a lot to handle and we didn't think too much more about the possibility for a couple weeks. We realized we needed to start shopping and make a decision before we lost our date with whoever we liked best, though.
Because price was the issue, we decided to explore a cheaper option that just cranks out wedding photography year-round. On a recommendation from Melissa, we visited Modern Image Studios. While the pictures they showed us were nice, the salesguy (the first part about the place I didn't like...) couldn't show us any full weddings their photographers had shot to give us a feel for how an event is captured, instead of just their few best pictures from hundreds of weddings. He also kept pushing a photographer that I didn't like, making me wonder if something was wrong with the guy and no one ever booked him, or if they were buddies. The rep was a little awkward and we just didn't gel with him. Plus we couldn't meet our actual photographer until after we booked them (with money, of course). No thanks.
So, back to Thomas (since we haven't won the lottery and Artisan is still far out of range).
We mulled over the fact that he still cost more than we wanted to pay, and for the price we weren't getting anything in print credits or albums. What he does include that we like is ownership of the images he takes, photos up online for guests to order 3 weeks after the wedding, and a CD with hi-res pictures from the wedding that we can use in any way we want 2 months after the wedding. That would allow us to make our own prints, and maybe our own albums to eliminate the problem above.
During that mulling time, my wedding support group, Jess, "fired" her disorganized photographer and needed to find a new one. I recommended her to Thomas (and shared Maggie's photography database that I have made my own). Jess visited him the next day and booked him.
So what?
As a result, Gavin and I are getting 10% off our own package, a free framed oversize print and 30% off one of the parents' albums, if we order through him. Sometime this week, we should be signing a contract and checking this off our list.
